Frontline: Is Wal-Mart good for America?

frontline: coming soon: is wal-mart good for america? | PBS

FRONTLINE offers two starkly contrasting images: one of empty storefronts in Circleville, Ohio, where the local TV manufacturing plant has closed down; the other--a sea of high rises in the South China boomtown of Shenzhen. The connection between American job losses and soaring Chinese exports? Wal-Mart.

*very* interesting... thanks for passing it along.

it's so easy to forget the information we give away tells its own story.

i remember when safeway first came out with their club cards. my mom was furious about it because it was no secret that they would use the cards to gather information about customers' shopping habits.

and i wonder... is there such a thing as a clean slate anymore in the information/digital age? will salvation come to the data warehouses of the world? every row of every table in every database that references you -- deleted -- with no backup...

i wonder what Jesus would do with people who could hack into corporate databases....hmmm.

had it turned on last night as I worked. actually, it was kinda boring. a lot of information about how Wal-Mart's model is crazy-powerful and bullyish toward manufacturers, but no real alternative vision. No doubt providing an alternative model for successful retail business in a global economy wasn't the point of this show, but it would have been interesting learn of better ways to do business. Maybe that was the point. Wal-Mart is the most successful retailer and exploitation of suppliers and labor workforces or bending to the whims of Wal-Mart (if you're a supplier) is the only way to stay viable.
