Open House for Tom's X-mas
Open Invite to an Open House
All,
Merry Christmas!
You are all invited to an open house to celebrate Christmas with me and my roommate Tom. Most of you know at least a bit about Tom's story and how we ended up being roomies. (If not, let me know and I can give you the history.)
As I have lived with Tom for the past 6 months or so, I have gotten to know him fairly well, yet he is still pretty uncomfortable when being around groups of people. Because of this fact, and because I know that he enjoys the holiday season (he decorates the apartment.....first Halloween jack-o-lanterns, now......lights, tinsel, and santa figurines!!!), I am going to have an open house for Tom's X-mas so that he can receive some of the holiday cheer!! ......and some gifts too!
So, the details:
Sunday, December 26th.
My apartment, 7912 SW 31st Ave #B, Portland 97219
Show up anytime between 1pm and 4pm.
My apartment is the concrete box. Not the street level apartment, but the one down the gravel stairs underneath, facing the back. Not a lot of parking. If my parking area is full, park across the street in the multnomah center parking lot.

Here's the deal though.
Tom has trouble talking. He has a throat condition that prevents him from talking. So, conversation is highly improbable. You can talk to me, of course, but don't expect to have a sit down and get to know the details of Tom's life. He may say hi, and shake your hand, and say thanks, but that may be all you get from him. That's just the way it is.
Also, don't expect to stay for long. Of course I will not kick you out. But I do want to avoid a lot of people being here at once. If a lot of people are hanging out, it no longer becomes an open house for Tom (because he will become uncomfortable with lots of people), but a party for my friends. Not that I would not want to spend time with y'all. But, I am trying to keep his comfort and enjoyment as the priority.
AND...
bring something as a gift for Tom.
it doesn't have to be expensive, or extravagant.
I have asked Tom what he wants for Christmas. He did not have a lot of ideas.
He mentioned fishing gear. When is he going to fish? I dunno. Where? I dunno. When? I dunno.
I am just passing it along.
He also said he would like christmas cards. A christmas greeting card.
Some ideas I had that he might enjoy:
clothes, or gift certificates for clothes. pants (30-32 waist, 30-32 length), shirts (medium or large).
he is still using some of my bedding, blankets and pillow. he may enjoy his own.
he loves coffee.
he loves cigarettes/tobacco (bugler or top). he rolls his own.
he likes shopping at fred meyer for most things.
he would enjoy going to a movie, or renting a movie.
Don't let this list hold you back. Feel free to diverge from what I have mentioned if you have some creative ideas.
Anything is appreciated.

some new color and banner pic to switch things up a bit. a little late for autumn. i like the pic, though.

i do enjoy spending an extra few minutes tweaking minute details of my blog. a shade of color to a random border here. a text width there. i do still try to post for my enjoyment, rather than anyone elses. that helps me justify that it is not entirely egomaniacal to have a blog, but rather a healthy avenue to express some creativity. no matter if it is only a stupid pixel height.
but...i do like having a counter.
hmm.
oh, and i need to buy Flash so i can change that stinking animation on the right. donations accepted. until then, you gotta watch that stupid guy getting chased by that ball over and over and over. i get an educator discount on flash, so you wouldnt need to donate much! paypal link coming soon! er...maybe not.

not much time to post lately....
so here are more thoughts that i could potential write more about......
or not.
life of a tutor. busy. do i want to tutor forever? what else would i do? i need to something more creative. rock star.
pnca is almost over for x-mas break. it will be nice to have a month off to refuel.
spending two days reuniting with mt. hood academy. not great pay, but i get a lift ticket. that could save me hundreds this year. anyone wanna snowboard?
sick again. i think i got it from being in so many different homes of tutoring clients. germs. particles. particle theory. yuck.
i lost at the poker tournament. well, i didn't win. out of 160 players, i placed about right in the middle. i played a dumb hand that put me out. i stopped thinking for just a few seconds. long enough to push all in and get beat. oh well. it was a fun time. i won the poker night that we had before the casino tournament, so it didn't cost me anything to enter.
what to do for x-mas? what to do for x-mas? i think i need to get outta portland for a bit. at least a weekend. orlando?
i have been feeling lonely lately. i miss laura.

i have been wondering/praying about why Jesus cried when Lazarus died. sad over the death of a friend? disappointed in the lack of faith of others? sad because others were sad? all of the above? none of the above? i have not yet been satisfied with my answers. still on the trail.
i still want to start an open mic here in multnomah village. thinking about doing it after the new year. maybe on the "first friday" times. i need to do some leg work on that. i need to write some songs. i need to sing better.
would like to be taking more pictures. tutoring slows down at the beginning of next week, and classes are done after next week. time time time.

Well, I think Saturday is the day.

This very Saturday, I will attempt to play in a poker tournament for the first time.
Gambling?!?!

Yep, A World Poker Tour Satellite Tournament.
If I win (or even place high enough), I get a spot in the Bellagio Super Satellite, and if I win that, I get entrance into the Bellagio Five Diamond World Poker Classic. That one will be on tv. Then, if I win that I get into The World Poker Tour Championship.
Listen to me. Talking about winning at poker tournaments. I didn't even win when my church had a small poker night (church? poker? huh?). I am playing with some friends this Friday, and they will probably school me. Well, I may get whooped, but it will be fun while it lasts.
There are only 162 spots in the tournament on Saturday, so half of the day will be waiting in line just to get a spot, then the rest of the day playing cards. Hopefully I will last a little while. Maybe even win. You never know.
Yet, no one is willing to go with me. Any takers? Where is Keortge when I need him?
****update: seriously....anyone wanna go with me. it is an all day thing. gotta leave early to get signed up, play all day (hopefully). I will drive. cost a little to play in the tourney. no limit texas hold em. or, even if you just like to hang out with me at a casino all day. i will be playing cards though.
oh, and did I mention that my therapist thinks this is a good idea. :)
