rain

3 comments so far

i would just like to take a moment to perpetuate my opinion that the rainfall in our wonderful city is to be received as God's grace upon the people of this city.

this is a sense that i had years ago, have mentioned only to a few, and would like to state today to you all.

so what?
so....go walk in the rain.
be in the rain.
no hoods. no umbrellas. no Mercurys over the head.
get wet and enjoy it.

migraines

3 comments so far

more and more headaches lately.

i used to get them all the time. then they kinda stopped, maybe only a few a year. now i am having more migraines and more general headaches.

i woke up with a migraine last week...
that hardly ever happens. i have gone to sleep with them, but not often do i wake up in the middle of the night with one when i did not have it when i went to sleep.

and...
i haven't really shaken it since then.
a bit over a week now.

it has been a while since i have headaches like this. it has gotten me thinking.
thinking about romans 8:22-27.

maybe i am crazy?
maybe not.

something is happening.
something deep.
something in me.
something so much bigger too.
an ache. a pain.
painful enough to wake me from sleep,
to keep me from work.

but what is it....???

more lego model

41 inches long so far.
this rendering shows 483 pieces, but i think i will use smaller pieces than what are shown, so it will be up around 750 pieces if i built what you see here.

I am thinking this thing will be about 60in x 60in x 10in.
and at about 1000 pieces per side, that is around 4000 total.
still have to think about either working on the interior of the building OR figuring out a roof for the beast.
still shooting for thanksgiving.
still waiting for donations.

mac hint for me

2 comments so far

who forgot to tell me this tasty hint??

to take a screen shot...
hold down "shift"+"open apple"+"3"

"open apple" is what we called that key in elementary school. there used to be an open apple and a closed apple, each keys on alternate sides of the space bar on the old Apple iie. the keys are still located there, but now they are both "open apples". We used to play "Lemonade Stand". it rocked.

can't tell you what minimum level of OS X you need for that snack, but it works on my version....(click to enlarge that pic to enourmous size)....i am running 10.4.2. for all i know this has been a feature since OS 7.

regardless, yummmm

screen shots are so cool.
so, fess up. who forgot to tell me?

it's alive...for realsies...

Step 1: Take some pics
Step 2: Model it in a CAD-like LEGO program
Step 3: Start building

Step 4: Get more LEGOs

click on that last pic. now compare to the first pic. you may notice some different colors. that is because i do not have the LEGOs i need. you might have the LEGOs i need. you may be the benfactor that has the money i need to buy the LEGOs i need.

that corner that i build is pretty much using all of the LEGOs I have that are the right color. and they are not the ideal size. and they really arent the right color except for the white...
the red are obviously not supposed to be there. but i have also been using light gray to build, and i actually need to use dark gray.
oh, the problems of a LOGO sculptor.

you are probably wondering why i just dont go get the LEGOs i need and do it my own darn self. i could. but i want this to be a project bigger than myself...i WANT others involved.

i am going to replicate this building as exactly as possible, to scale. it does not seem worth the undertaking if i dont do is as precisely as the vast amount of LEGO pieces allow.

PROGRESS REPORT:
i have taken 60+ pictures of the building.
i have looked at it closely, and from a distance. i am studying the subject.
i have started modeling the building in that CAD-like program (Bricksmith and LDraw.org and Mac Brick CAD).
i have started building with the pieces that i have. most of what has been built will have to be rebuilt when i get the right color and size pieces.

to show y'all how much i care, i am going to go buy some MORE legos myself.
see you at the lego store.

for this picture...this is what i need so far: (click to enlarge)

click on the paypal button on the right to donate.

here is a picture of my paypal account balance right now...

shawn's gone crazy

8 comments so far

ok.
so...

i was struck by inspiration.
with inspiration?
by inspiration?

well, whichever it was...it got me.

its a bit silly if you ask me, and i really have tried to get it out of my head, but it won't go away. a week now it has been in my head. so, i figure i should give it a go.

most of you know that i work part time at an art school. i am around artists all the time. i have friends that are artists. i do NOT consider myself one. however, for the past couple of weeks, ideas have been coming to me. artistic ideas. or at least i think they are artistic. maybe they are, maybe they aren't. i dunno.

so...there is one idea that came to me that i would like to pursue immediately.

ready? am i stalling enough? i am a bit embarrassed to even mention it...

i want to create a LEGO sculpture.
yep. LEGO

specifically, i want to re-create the art school building in which i teach. not only do i want to create it, but i plan on documenting the process (photos and video) and presenting this at school the week after Thanksgiving during a special week called "Fall Focus". Fall Focus is a week were faculty, students, staff, and community members take a week off of regularly scheduled classes to discuss their work and other interesting and relevant topics that are happening in the artist community.

I would like to have planned, created, built and documented a re-creation of the school in LEGO blocks to present that week.

I have already taken some preliminary photos of the school, as well as done some web research on LEGO sculptures and LEGO art. Did you know that there is a ridiculously large LEGO sub-culture that exists?? It is huge. Plus LEGOLAND.

There is a LEGO store in the mall near me, and I have visited and started asking questions...and have even begun purchasing some LEGOs to start the process. I have begun looking through BrickLink, (a huge online worldwide clearinghouse for all things LEGO) in order to find specialty pieces that i will need. I even called my mom to see if they still had my childhood lego sets sitting in the attic somewhere.

So, i have the vision, i have the timeline (Thanksgiving), but what i do not have are all of the thousands of LEGO bricks that i will need for this project. In the past week, i have bought close to 1500 bricks. That is not even close to the amount of bricks i will need to accomplish this feat. I have not been able to take close measurement of the school yet, but I think i will need at least 10x that amount. At least. Maybe more.

So, this is where y'all come in.

I am asking for your donations to help this piece of artwork come to be a reality.

Donation possibility #1:
Give me your LEGOS. Find that old box of LEGOS that you don't use anymore and give them to shawn.

Donation possibilty #2:
When you go to garage sales, and you see a pile of LEGOS, buy them and give them to me.

Donation possibility #3:
Go to the LEGO store at washington square and buy me a gift card for $xxx.xx
(this should be above and beyond your regular gift giving to shawn)

Donation possibility #4:
Give me your money. Seriously. Some of you may want to actually just contribute to this project finacially. If you want to send a check, leave a comment and i will get in touch with you and give you my address. Also, I have enabled a PAYPAL account for you to deposit money for this purpose. Any money you deposit will be used for the purchase of LEGOs, or for the acquisition of materials needed to complete this project. Click the PAYPAL button below, or the one that is in the right column.
(Paying through PAYPAL will charge me a fee of 2.9% of your contribution)

Donation possibility #5:
Tell all your friends to check out my blog and contribute to the project.

LEGOs are expensive, so anything will help. $1, $2, $10, $20. Don't drink one of your mochas today, and give me that $3.50.

I can give no receipts, nor can you write this off. It is a free gift to shawn and his LEGO endeavours, as crazy as they are.

What i can give you is my committment to do all that i can to make this project become a reality. And, I will also create an email list that will update you all on the progress and the needs of the project. Heck, I may even be able to include in the project itself a donors list to hang on the wall of the LEGO building. Or maybe anyone that contributes will get their name on a brick that i will include in the building. (I just thought of these ideas. no promises on how, but i will figure out a way to thank you all).

Help this dream become reality.
I loved creating with LEGOs when I was growing up.
Help me continue to live the LEGO dream.

I will post pictures soon of the actual school building as well as the progress of the LEGO re-creation.
