Dr. Cue and Shawn, 1 degree of separation

check this out...

I know you have seen him clean it up on ESPN2 with his amazing trick shots.

That's right. An autographed, personalized picture of Dr. Cue. I think I am the only one that got one. And I didn't even have to ask, he offered. Can you dig it?

Dr. Cue came to PNCA earlier this week, and I got to hang with him for a while. He did his show during the lunch break, and then all the students had to go back to class, and I hung with him for another hour with a couple others and chatted with him and asked him questions about pool...
ya know...normal stuff like...
felt quality, high right english, the geometry of the table, various systems of pool playing, the "tip" unit of measuring english, right brain vs left brain training, etc.
Normal Dr. Cue stuff. It rocked.

So, as he showed us his "finale"...a 15 ball, crazy, all up in yoru face, explosion of pool excitement, we asked him questions about how he practices and learns tricks. So I suggested that he try it with his eyes closed. He said he had never thought of that, and that he liked the idea, and would practice it, maybe to use in a future event. He tried it while we were there with them closed, it didn't work out so well.

So if you are ever watching Dr. Cue beat up on a guy in the ESPN trick shot championship, and he rocks out the "starburst" trick....with his eyes closed....that was my idea.

here's the "Starburst" trick from some other show he did.

Notice that his eyes are open. In the future they may not be.
He will then rename the trick..."Shawnburst"...and by will, I mean won't.

new chili peppers album in may. a double.

i have been listening to these guys for a long time.
tim reese and shane reaney controversially threw "mother's milk" into the pa system at spartquake in 1990 for all of 1st and 2nd lunch to enjoy. i am not sure the principal quite knew what they were singing about. i am not sure i did either. i am not sure anyone else in the school even knew who the red hot chili peppers were, but when i heard what i heard, it hooked me.

in the fall of 1991 they released "blood sugar sex magik". its their best album. subsequently, they toured to promote that album.

i passed up a chance to see them play in january 1992 at the salem armory. some band named nirvana was opening for them. and another band....what was their name....oh...pearl jam.....pearl jam started the night off. (interesting note: the chili peppers opened for pearl jam in seattle in 2000. 8 years later, roles reversed). i think the only guy i know that went to it was roone meier. the rest of us were dumb. i think eddie vedder and kurt cobain got in a fight soon afer that gig and one of them left the tour. mkinmotion probably knows the trivia on that and can fill in the details.

i dont know why i didnt go to that show. money maybe. a ride to salem maybe. no one knew really who pearl jam was at the time. and i gotta tell ya, nirvana in 1991/2 was not the nirvana that exists today. there was no legacy, no suicide, no legend. heck, there was hardly anything except "smells like teen spirit", which was so overplayed on 970, kufo, and mtv that we all made fun of it. it was not cool to like nirvana in 1992. they were popular, and popular was not cool. nirvana played SNL a week after that salem chili peppers show i didnt go to. chili peppers played SNL a month later. pearl jam 2 months after that.

anyway...i saw them (rhcp) play in portland a few years ago (supported by the flaming lips). i got the tickets before i knew that frusciante was back with them. it was the first time i saw them play live. over ten years (closer to 15) since i started listening to them. it was an alright show. i made me kick myself for missing that show in 1992. missing the chance to hear freaky styley, upliftmofopartyplan, or mothers milk live. missing the change to hear blood sugar. this most recent concert consisted mostly of content off of their last few albums. only a few songs off those older albums (give it away, under the bridge, and i think they did their cover of hendrix' fire). i dont blame them. new music. new times. new fans.

so, now, a new double album and another tour (as well as helping perry ferrell keep lollapalooza back on track this summer). i gotta admit that although these last three albums have not been poor...i still long for some old school, 1st decade chili pepper sounds. i wouldn't be sad if flea slapped it up a bit. if frusciante just played a few chunks here and there. anthony rocked some of that LA whiteboy rap stuff he's got. would that be so wrong? they have a new set of fans that i dont think know that they have a half dozen albums before californication...or that the cool lick in that crazy town song is a chili peppers sample.

looks like they'll be comin' portland first...i think i will go...

screen capture taken from RedHotChiliPeppers.com

and this from their itunes page...

although i could pre-order the album through iTunes and get it the instant it "drops", i think i will find a tower records and go buy it in the store like we did way back in 1992.

oh, and i think i will buy the new ipod if its black...with a red scroll wheel.

Rivers and Tides

A documentary about artist Andy Goldsworthy.

Ridiculously amazing. I quit everything else and aspire to do cool things like him. I am probably jumping on a bandwagon that missed years ago, but I don't care. Amazing.

If you rent at Movie Madness (which you should, it is the best movie store in Portland)...you gotta wait until Friday...because I have it. Or, go to the library, they probably have it and it is free.
