ironically, more on blogging....and life
I have sometimes missed out on an experience because I was too busy trying to document the experience....e.g. concerts. I have stopped taking cameras to concerts because I can easily become too distracted by trying to get some good shots of the show rather than actually enjoying the show. I later realize that I got some good shots (and they usually aren't THAT good), but I don't remember the enjoyment or the experience of the music or musicians.
While in London, I did the same thing. I stopped taking my camera with me, because I did not want to miss seeing and listening and experiencing being in another country and culture because I was too busy clicking shots of the places and people I was with. So, I got less pictures and video than usual, but I have vivid memories and experiences. Of course there is a balance. It is just too easy to get out of balance. Its stinky when you look back at the pictures of an event and you remember taking the picture more than enjoying the experience. Or worse, you have no mental or emotional recollection of the event, and your pictures are your ONLY memory of it.
There is a good chance these blogs will be around for a while, something our children will read. A digital scrapbook of our lives.
Yikes.
This is a unique day in age when our children will have such access to who their parents were as young(er) people. The future generations will have a crazy ability to know who and what their parents, grandparents, etc. were thinking through at various points in life.
At some point in your life, your child may not ask you about what you think about something, but will rather ask Google about what you think about it. Or maybe just search your blog for the answer.
Some of us will get too busy blogging our lives that we will pass up opportunities to actually talk (and listen) to others about life. We will look back at our blogs and our digital photos and our iMovies as life, rather than actually communicationg our experiences of one another to one another. We will have no mental or emotional connection to our previous actions, only pixels and picas of our documentation of the events.
(cue swelling emotional movie score)
Again, though, there is balance. If nothing is recorded, much would be lost: if everything is recorded, everything will be lost.
Document when you must, live while you can.
(how do you like them Yogi Berras?)

my life of jobs
I have been thinking about blogging. The point. The purpose.
I have been thinking about it as a means to save information that I may want to look at in the future. I am not sure others will, but I might. Sounds like an obvious reason to have a blog, right?
But, I am usually thinking about the present, so blogging is a present-tense thing. This is a post that represents a more diary-type entry, something I want to remember, which I may forget if I don't write it down now.
anyway...
in light of my last post, its a list of my jobs in chronological order for the past 16 years of my life.
for posterity.

"Your Social Security Statement"
I think it was when Clinton was in office when some legislation was passed that now sends me (and you?) a letter every year reminding me of how much money I made (or didn't make) each year of my life, and how much I will (or won't) get if I retire...
or die.
I guess I get nothing if I die. My survivors get it. I think my only survivors are Sallie Mae and Uncle Sam.
Regardless, I think it is interesting that I have now been working over half of my life. I just crossed over the 50% timeline as a paid member of this ecomony.
From the $1850 of a 1990 Crown Car Washer to the $$ch-ching of a 2005 math teacher, I have now worked 16 of my 31 years.
It's probably bad form, but I added it up...I have made $247,222 in Taxed Social Security Earnings in my life. Give or take a couple grand for some extra cash that may or may not have made it onto the tax form, and I have worked myself to a quarter of a million dollars.
I guess I could make a point about how much Tiger Woods makes per putt and feel sorry for my meager earnings....
or I could mention the couple of bucks that some worker in the middle of a 3rd world country makes per month and sing of my abundance.
or, I could just let it sit....16 years = $250,000.
Thats a lot of cars washed, sandwiches made, tents put up/down, computers fixed, classes taught, sermons given, and math problems conquered.

made up words
Sometimes I make up words.
Today I was txting Laura some of my made up words.
So when I was txting those new shawnwords, my cell phone was trying to finish them for me...
I typed....
ger
And it finished the word as "gerchanovsky"
What the?
What cell phone finishes any word starting with "ger" as "gerchanovsky"????
I think I am on to unlocking the mysteries of the universe.
Either that or I found a joke a programmer (Alex Gerchanovsky?) played on Motorola.
Its one of those two options.
I will get to the bottom of it.

so.....LOST, Season 1
I managed to watch the entire 1st season of LOST in the last 2 days. Its the first time I have watched a tv series (season) like that....all at once...beginning to end.
It's a good show, but there are things that stick out when you watch it so much in such a short amount of time. I am not sure if I would like it more or less if I watched it weekly. I think it would have different strengths and weaknesses if I watched it over a longer stretch of time.
So, I know I can watch the 2nd season...but here is what stands out so far...
I know this is all old news for most of you, but if you wanna talk about it (without giving away any 2nd seaons stuff) feel free. I am sure anything I say here has been said millions of times already on millions of other blogs...but it is mostly for me to take a little stock on what I am watching...and maybe look back after Season 2 (and 3)...and see where I am/was.
Or, you can just make fun of my thoughts and predictions.
Things that intrigue me after 1 season:
The John Locke character. I like him as a character, although his obsession with The Hatch is a little disturbing and seems to be a weakness...especially after Walt and Hurley warned him. But, I know nothing of The Hatch yet, so...I will wait. I guess I am still thinking that as much as they portray Locke as a Christ-type character, I am expecting him to go the "anti-" route anytime.
Hurley. Dude, it was good to finally see his backstory near the end of the season, dude. He is great comic relief, but to know where he is coming from and the mysticism around his character adds a good depth to him. I am thinking, though, that maybe LOST is a new millenium "Dallas" and at the end this whole show we will all be enlightened to find that it was all just a huge fried-chicken induced Hurley nightmare. He is tied to a lot of the main storylines. The Ethan manifesto thing. The Polar Bears/comic book thing. The Rouseau/numbers/hatch thing. In the end, it might just all be about Hugo.
Walt. His "special-ness" seems to be key, but is still quite an undeveloped story. Now the season ends with him being kidnapped by pirates. I think Walt will be an important part in Season 2.
Charlie. I like that little bass-playin Hobbit, but where is it going? Claire forgot their entire relationship. Now he found an entire plane full of heroine. Bad news for Chuck.
Extras. Watching the extra survivors in the background is hilarious. Trying to look busy. Trying to blend in. I think its funny how LOST makes fun of itself a bit. Boone joked with Locke early about the Star Trek character that doesn't come back from the missions....then a few episodes later....the science teacher that decides to join the adventure blows himself up with dynamite. The writers also take jabs at the characters they create. The jokes that Kate, Jack, Sawyer, and Charlie make of each other actually seem a bit more like jokes that the writers are having between themselves and the characters that they have created.
Things that not so interesting after Season 1....
Claire. Claire's baby being kidnapped by Rousseau and taken to the Black Smoke and then being returned seemed (at this point in time) to be purposeless. Although, she named him Aaron, and the episodes where named "Exodus" seems to be pointing a bit to some Old Testamenet tie-ins. But I think I am thinking too much about it. The brief link that Claire made between Rousseau and Ethan could go in the Intriguing pile though. But Rousseau even being around seems ridiculous to me.
Jack/Kate/Sawyer. Tired of it. Doesn't seem to be moving along at all as a plot line or as characters.
Sayid/Shannon. Blah. Uninteresting. And just looking at any LOST pictures, doesn't look like Shannon is long for the world.
Fighting. When you watch all the episodes back-to-back-to-back, you realize how many times people get popped in the chops. There is way too much hitting in the face, shootings, and full beach tackling going on. Can't we just all get along?
"Can I come?" Too much of that line. Or..."Where are you going?", "Well, I am going with you!!" They make it seem like this island is huge....but if someone wanders off, it seems like it takes no time to find them. Its a freakin jungle. Who could find anybody out there? I have been to Dominica...a small Caribbean island...if I started wandering through the rain forests...no one would find me. Oh, and where are the snakes? Why are there no snakes on the island/jungle? Or for that matter, why were there no snakes on the plane!?! ha. AND....where did the huge monster go that was in the first few episodes??? Did it just disappear? Remember, that thing that killed the pilot. Locke had an encounter with it...but where is it now?
enough.
oh, and watching 20+ episodes in 3 days makes you realize how cool the LOST Intro is. Just a flyover the word LOST. Its cool. And the music is cool. Trombones make anything better. And at 42 minutes an episode, tv on dvd rocks.
Now that I got that out of my system, back to being a contributing member of society. Well, until I borrow Season 2 from someone.

some of you have sent emails asking....
I am in London still, and I am safe.
A lot of people from the conference I was attending were planning on flying back to the US today, but I am sure that they are probably sitting at Heathrow and waiting.
I am glad I am here for another week. I am currently outside of London in Reading with a friend, Pete.
All is well, thanks for asking.

ketch-up
i am alive.
my blog is alive.
I have been pretty busy the last few weeks.
Both Tom and I are moved into seperate new places. It has been a great adventure to get Tom into his own place. He is now living in a studio apartment in SE Portland. Its a nice place. Great people, great location. All of the people that live in the building are all 62+. The management plan cool events for the people. Train trips through the Gorge, bus rides to the farmer's markets, ice cream in the lobby. It is a good community for Tom to be in. There are plenty of people that are willing to be his friend, and my hope is that he will welcome the graciousness. Plus, $163 a month. Who woulda guessed?
I am sure I will have more to update on that...if anyone wants to know more, feel free to ask.
I am also living alone now. A little studio up on Marquam Hill. A smaller apartment than Tom even!! Its a nice location, quiet, close to downtown, great views. Lots of medical students living around me.
I am off to London next week for a conference...its called "Bridges". The conference connects the disciplines of math, art, music and science. It will be a good time. Plus, its London. That won't suck.
Because of the nature of the conference, PNCA is helping with the cost, which is great. I am hoping to grab as much as I can and bring it back to the classroom in the fall and spring. PNCA is a great place that has been an encouragement for me to be me and open up opportunities for me to teach math in a way that makes sense to me, and hopefully this next generation of artists. Anyways, London in 10 days or so. Get your tour guide skills ready Pete.
So, for those of you that were playing the schmicroprizing game, it will continue. Like I said, I was moving Tom and moving myself, and I had a couple of incompetent comcast guys trying to hook up my cable, which postponed everything a couple of weeks also. So, sorry to take so long. Things will happen more steadily, hopefully.
Oh, and I am writing this on a new MacBook, which may help the productivity....more on that later.

school's out for the summer
feels great to be done with school. pnca has been done for a month or so, but the high schools just got out last week. tutoring is over for the summer. the business had the best year it has ever had. lots of appointments. lots of tutors working with me. lots of happy families. lots of math. i am enjoying the break.
one of the things that i like most about having time is to be able to hang with people. today i got to spend a good lunch with lucas. then some hangtime catching up with rich. these are 2 people that I enjoy very much, and time with them is important for me to be me.
also, laura flies back into town tonight after a whirlwind on RAAM supporting her brother's winning efforts. I will be going to dinner with her and her cousin. i think swagat is in order. some more good peeps with good food.
having time is good.
having time with people is gooder.

next endeavours... House Sitting and MicroPrizes
a little game:
you have heard of microloans....these are microprizes. (maybe i should "tm" that word, huh?)
prizes will be given to the first person that can...
A. name the city that this photo was taken: 1 cent
B. give me the name of this dog: 2 cents
C. identify the park that the grass is from: 3 cents
you may answer any or all questions.
the game starts.......now!
rules/regulations/disclaimers:
1. all answers must be EMAILED to me here: schmetzger. In addition to your answers, please make sure you leave the name and link you want posted to the leaderboard. Do not leave your answer in the comments, it will removed, and you will not be eligible for this microprize game. Plus, you might ruin it for everyone else.
2. YOU ONLY GET ONE SHOT. You can not keep guessing until you are right. I will not give you any more hints than what is stated in the questions and on my blog. I will not give cents unless you submit a final answer in email form. This rule applies to everyone, and Traci.
3. all correct answers will be awarded the above microprize amount, but will be paid out when I decide to pay out, and in a manner (and with a prize) that is at least equivalent to the cash amount.
4. each correct response will get their name (or pseudonym) linked to their blog/website entered into the microprize leaderboard.
5. anyone with the middle name "jenard" is excluded from this round of questions.
6. anyone married to anyone with the middle name "jenard" is excluded from this round of questions.

9. any laughing or making fun of my flyer design will be disqualified from this and future microprize games.
10. if you find a typo, do not tell me.
11. the correct answer will be posted in 4 days (?).
12. i know these questions are a bit obscure, but hang in there...this game will get cooler. The answers to these questions could be sleuthed from information on my blog. I am not saying that the answers are on my blog. The harder the question, the more cents.
note: i just checked...looks like the term "microprize" gets uses for more important things than my game....
guess i will have to call it [sch]microprizes.

Dr. Cue and Shawn, 1 degree of separation
check this out...
I know you have seen him clean it up on ESPN2 with his amazing trick shots.
That's right. An autographed, personalized picture of Dr. Cue. I think I am the only one that got one. And I didn't even have to ask, he offered. Can you dig it?
Dr. Cue came to PNCA earlier this week, and I got to hang with him for a while. He did his show during the lunch break, and then all the students had to go back to class, and I hung with him for another hour with a couple others and chatted with him and asked him questions about pool...
ya know...normal stuff like...
felt quality, high right english, the geometry of the table, various systems of pool playing, the "tip" unit of measuring english, right brain vs left brain training, etc.
Normal Dr. Cue stuff. It rocked.
So, as he showed us his "finale"...a 15 ball, crazy, all up in yoru face, explosion of pool excitement, we asked him questions about how he practices and learns tricks. So I suggested that he try it with his eyes closed. He said he had never thought of that, and that he liked the idea, and would practice it, maybe to use in a future event. He tried it while we were there with them closed, it didn't work out so well.
So if you are ever watching Dr. Cue beat up on a guy in the ESPN trick shot championship, and he rocks out the "starburst" trick....with his eyes closed....that was my idea.
here's the "Starburst" trick from some other show he did.
Notice that his eyes are open. In the future they may not be.
He will then rename the trick..."Shawnburst"...and by will, I mean won't.

happy day to my friend
Happy Birthday to my friend Matt...."MK in Motion" as he likes to be called in blogland.
I have been wanting to write a post about him for a while in order to pimp his blog. He has some cool stuff goin' on over there. He recently uprooted from Anchorage, and moved to warmer lands.....and I would tell you more, but then you might not go visit his blog. You are officially being encouraged to go visit, so go visit. Here is the link again....MK in Motion. Make sure you work back through some of the archives as well. Like I said, some good stuff.
It is also his birthday today, March 9th...so as part of his gift from me....I am posting.....about him. Lame gift? Not intentionally lame. Trying to honor a good friend. So, happy birthday Matt! I love ya!
Pretty much all of my top 10.....20.......50 memories between 1990 and 1998ish involve Matt in some capacity. Thems was some pretty good years of hangin. I could quickly turn this into a million inside jokes, of which 4 people would understand, so I will leave it to just say that I am truely glad that this man has been my friend for the last decade and a half. Although the past few years our geography has prevented the hangtime, I am looking forward to how our lives and friendship will continue to grow in the decades to come.
Happy Birthday Matt! This post is for you.

i actually drove to the Comcast store in Milwaukie to upgrade my cable service so that I would get the OLN and be able to watch this year. which is kinda ridiculous as i will be spending half of the tour in Iowa speaking at a camp.
the tour is so cool though, how could i not?

it gets me
i dont watch too much tv, but when i do it is usually late at night, and i catch reruns of various shows...
over the past few weeks i have caught 4 or 5 episodes of a show called INTERVENTION
there is something about it.
i get choked up almost every time i watch it.
maybe it is watching people spiral down, but then seeing their family and friends that love them intervene to help them choose to survive.
transformation is powerful.
it gets me every time.
watch it if you can.

another crazy thing. this is becoming more and more a world wide web of voyeurs.
here is Village Coffee A9.com/Amazon yellow pages style.
make sure you click the arrows to walk up the street (right) to the Lucky Lab. only a block from my apartment.
a "walking" tour of Portland.
here is how A9/Amazon did it.
and click if you want to be the guy/gal that makes it happen.

does anyone else think that this rocks?
sure we have seen and used mapquest and yahoo maps.....
but try google maps. click around, give it a whirl.
maybe i am 9 months behind everyone else, but it rocks.
oh, and don't forget to toggle between "map" and "satellite" view. (upper right corner)
great for directions to places, or to just look for cool places..... scrollable maps......just click and drag the map.
cool to spy on friends too from satellite view.
i see you.
all of a sudden i am a google commercial.

any math geeks???
one day i am contemplating the end (or significant changes) in my tutoring business...
...the next I am overwhelmed by the bombardment of new and renewed clients that gotta have the tutor love.
a bit stressful. more clients than I can handle. more clients than I or any of my tutors can handle. need more tutors. calling all tutors. calling all math tutors.
if you can teach math wonderfully, or know someone that can teach math wonderfully to high school (and some middle school) students....they have no option but to call me, or leave a comment on this blog, or shout real loud in the direction of SW portland that they are willing to tutor for me and my (evidentally) growing tutoring business.
it pays real money. decent money.
even if you only want to tutor 1 hour a week, shawn can use you.
come join the tutoring world domination.

chewing
had coffee with Ken Lloyd today. inspiring guy to be around. humble and generous with his time and his heart. great listener. visionary. forerunner.
we talked about some amazing things.
of note, and thus a blog entry, we discussed the redeeming of the heart of Portland through the living out of sacrifice to the homeless and widows of our beautiful, unique, misunderstood, dark city.
more pieces to a percolating thought/prayer/idea that I have had (as well as others evidentally) that Portland will lead the way, lead the country, in how to deal with the injustice of homelessness. Our city will change as our hearts turn to the homeless, fatherless, sick, and widowed.
when taking big bites, chew before swallowing.

tweak
some new color and banner pic to switch things up a bit. a little late for autumn. i like the pic, though.
need a new subtitle also.
i do enjoy spending an extra few minutes tweaking minute details of my blog. a shade of color to a random border here. a text width there. i do still try to post for my enjoyment, rather than anyone elses. that helps me justify that it is not entirely egomaniacal to have a blog, but rather a healthy avenue to express some creativity. no matter if it is only a stupid pixel height.
but...i do like having a counter.
hmm.
oh, and i need to buy Flash so i can change that stinking animation on the right. donations accepted. until then, you gotta watch that stupid guy getting chased by that ball over and over and over. i get an educator discount on flash, so you wouldnt need to donate much! paypal link coming soon! er...maybe not.
or maybe so.

all in
Well, I think Saturday is the day.
The day I play.
This very Saturday, I will attempt to play in a poker tournament for the first time.
Gambling?!?!
Egad!
Yep, A World Poker Tour Satellite Tournament.
If I win (or even place high enough), I get a spot in the Bellagio Super Satellite, and if I win that, I get entrance into the Bellagio Five Diamond World Poker Classic. That one will be on tv. Then, if I win that I get into The World Poker Tour Championship.
Listen to me. Talking about winning at poker tournaments. I didn't even win when my church had a small poker night (church? poker? huh?). I am playing with some friends this Friday, and they will probably school me. Well, I may get whooped, but it will be fun while it lasts.
There are only 162 spots in the tournament on Saturday, so half of the day will be waiting in line just to get a spot, then the rest of the day playing cards. Hopefully I will last a little while. Maybe even win. You never know.
Yet, no one is willing to go with me. Any takers? Where is Keortge when I need him?
****update: seriously....anyone wanna go with me. it is an all day thing. gotta leave early to get signed up, play all day (hopefully). I will drive. cost a little to play in the tourney. no limit texas hold em. or, even if you just like to hang out with me at a casino all day. i will be playing cards though.
oh, and did I mention that my therapist thinks this is a good idea. :)

too interesting not to post
I didn't think my blog was going to be a blog that posts about other blog posts.....but that's part of this world.
oh well.
This was interesting enough to send you all to. I spent some time in Scotland last year. I may need to go hang in that monastery for a bit on next years trip. Really.
And some of the big picture church stuff gets me thinking in a couple of new ways as it applies to my life specifically. more on that later.
